Stories from the Learning Space

A first-hand reflection from the first student to attend Lepo Lorun's weaving school.

Sydira, the first student at Lepo Lorun weaving school

My name is Sydira and I was the first student to attend Lepo Lorun’s school of weaving! There are so many reasons to feel grateful for this experience. It is an immense honour to be the first student of this unique and invaluable education experience. My interest in Ikat weaving has been growing over the last three years. I first learned about this impressive and sacred art through my studies in University. I wrote back and forth with Alfonsa during my time in school and once I graduated, I took the first opportunity that I had to travel to Lepo Lorun and observe and learn this ancient art for myself. The slow and mindful practice of creating a woven piece of fabric is amazing. I find myself learning to practice patience and mindfulness as the master weavers taught me, step by step, how a piece of clothing is crafted. All of the women here are experts, and are capable of creating pure art with the natural tools around them. Each day, one or more of the women sat with me and walked me through the impressively intricate steps required to create an ikat fabric. As an avid knitter, my time here and everything I have learned is a welcome addition to my ever-growing love for the fiber arts. I will take this knowledge with me for the rest of my life, holding my time here close to my heart. I cannot recommend this experience enough to anyone who wants to expand their knowledge and appreciation of this sacred, ancient, indigenous art form.
